2018 Outstanding Student of the Year
Andrew Shehata, a master’s student at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, was named as C2SMART’s 2018 Outstanding Student of the Year. Shehata works with Professor Hani Nassif, C2SMART Associate Di- rector for Outreach and Technology Transfer, in the RIME Lab at Rutgers.
Shehata completed a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in 2017 at Rutgers. He has worked on research pertaining to a health monitoring system of infrastructure facilities such as road and bridges, fiber-rein- forced concrete for rehabilitation project and testing of beams with bond- ed and unbonded tendons. He has also contributed to projects involving the use of Weigh-In-Motion technology and other types of sensors to evaluate the impact of overweight trucks on infrastructure. Shehata in- terned with Jacobs in NYC in 2017 where he was involved in high-speed rail bridge and inspection projects. In 2015-2016, he mentored students on their academic progress and clarified difficult subject matter as a student peer leader at the Rutgers Learning Assistant Program.
UTEP Hosts SunCity Hackathon
C2SMART co-sponsored the SunCity Hack, hosted at UTEP the weekend of April 26-28 and organized by the university’s Computer Science Department. C2SMART PI Kelvin Cheu and affiliated faculty Natalia Villanueva Rosales and Jeffrey Weidner were involved with the event, attracted eight teams of five students from engineering and computer science majors at UTEP. Each team was tasked with conceiving and developing a demo for an app, then had five minutes to present the idea, their solution and demo in front of a panel of judges made up of UTEP faculty, representatives from event sponsor Microsoft, and the City of El Paso.
First place was awarded for an app for reporting and providing information about ADA-compliant
infrastructure and businesses. Another team earned second place for an app designed for visitors to El Paso, and third place was awarded for an app to help drivers find parking in downtown El Paso. Other ideas presented at the hackathon included apps to match seniors with volunteers to move trash bins on collection days, to provide navigation by the safest route, and to match volunteers with events and non-profit organizations.
