Dr. Kaan Ozbay serves as the Director of the C2SMART Center responsible for overseeing all of the Center’s activities. He joined the Department of Civil and Urban engineering and Center for Urban Science and Progress at NYU in August 2013. Since 1994, Dr. Ozbay, has been the Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator of 80 projects funded at a level of more than $11,00,000 by NSF, NJDOT, NYMTC, NYSDOT, New Jersey Highway Authority, USDOT, FHWA, VDOT, CUNY University Transportation Research Center (UTRC), Department of Homeland Security, USDOT ITS Research Center of Excellence. He was the founding director of the Rutgers Intelligent Transportation Systems (RITS) laboratory.

Joseph Chow

Dr. Joseph Chow serves as the Deputy Director of the C2SMART Center. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil & Urban Engineering and Center for Urban ITS at NYU, and heads BUILT@NYU: the Behavioral Urban Informatics, Logistics, and Transport Laboratory. His research expertise lies in transportation systems, with emphasis on multimodal networks, behavioral urban logistics, smart cities, and transport economics. Dr. Chow has published approximately 70 peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings, and technical reports, of which more than 30 are in journals like Transportation ScienceTransportation Research Part ABC, and E.

Shri Iyer

Executive Director

Shri Iyer serves as the Executive Director for the C2SMART Center. He oversees the day-to-day operations of the center as well as agency outreach and strategic planning of the center. Shri previously worked at MTA New York City Transit, where he worked on promoting data-driven policy and analysis within the agency. He is also experienced in working with other New York City agencies, and brings with him extensive knowledge of the regional transportation system. Prior to working at the MTA, he worked in transportation research at Rutgers University where he participated in several city, state, and federal-sponsored research projects. Shri holds a M.S. in Civil Engineering (transportation) from Rutgers.

Hani Nassif

Associate Director for Outreach and Technology Transfer

Professor Hani Nassif is serving as the Associate Director for Outreach and Technology Transfer. He is currently working in the research area of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and Field Testing of Infrastructure facilities with emphasis on railroad as well as highway bridges. He is also an associate director for the newly established Center on Research on Concrete Application for Sustainable Transportation (RE-CAST) that is one of three Tier 1 University Transportation Centers (UTCs) selected to address the U.S.DOT’s strategic goal of State of Good Repair.  Dr. Nassif has several years of practical experience in the area of structural design and construction.

Kelvin Chieu

Dr. Ruey (Kelvin) Cheu earned his Ph.D. degree in Transportation Systems Engineering at the University of California at Irvine in 1994. His research interest and expertise include traffic operations, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), public and intermodal transportation, transportation logistics and transportation security. He has led and involved in projects funded by TxDOT, El Paso MPO, FHWA, USDOT and other agencies.  He has published more than 73 papers in international peer reviewed journals and more than 100 papers in conferences. His publications has been cited more than 2700 times, with h-index of 29. This earns him #11 most cited scholar in Transportation Engineering category in Google Scholar.

Jeff Ban

Dr. Xuegang (Jeff) Ban is an Associate Professor of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Automobile Engineering from Tsinghua University, and his M.S. in Computer Sciences and Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. His research interests are in Transportation Network Modeling and Simulation, Urban Traffic Modeling and Operations, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and Transportation Big Data Analytics. He has published over 50 papers in refereed journals or as book chapters, and more than 40 papers in refereed conference proceedings.

Jason Szeto

Grant Manager

Jason Szeto joined the NYU Tandon School of Engineering as a Grant Manager for the C²SMART Center in July 2017. In his position, he is responsible for finance, grants management, and administration of the various grants that contribute to the center’s goals. Before coming to the C²SMART Center, Jason was a Senior Financial Analyst at the NYU Langone Perlmutter Cancer Center, and prior to that, was at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health managing and providing financial analysis for various federal and private research grants and awards. Jason holds a Bachelor of Business Administration with Specialization in Business Management and Finance degree from CUNY Brooklyn College.
