PROFESSOR, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT EL PASO
Dr. Ruey (Kelvin) Cheu earned his Ph.D. degree in Transportation Systems Engineering at the University of California at Irvine in 1994. His is well-known for his research in the applications of artificial intelligence in transportation, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). His latest research passions are smart cities, parking, transportation-community health. He has led projects funded by Texas Department of Transportation, El Paso Metropolitan Planning Organization, U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Department of Homeland Security and other agencies, with total external research funding of more than $5 million (as the principal investigator).
He has published more than 80 papers in international peer reviewed journals. His publications have been cited more than 5500 times, with an h-index of 38. The GoogleScholar consistently ranks him among the top 20 most highly cited scholar in Transportation Engineering. An independent study using SCOPUS data and published in PLOS Biology Journal in 2020 ranked Dr. Cheu among the world’s top 2% most cited researchers within their specialty areas.
At UTEP, he is a Professor with the Department of Civil Engineering, advocates the smart city community and directs the dual master degree program. He is a Professional Engineer in Texas, and a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
