C2SMARTER Wins USDOT Tier 1 UTC Designation Under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law
C2SMART Center is proud to announce that its proposal to form the Connected Communities for Smart Mobility Toward Accessible and Resilient Transportation for Equitably Reducing Congestion (C2SMARTER) Center was selected for funding by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). C2SMARTER is one of just twenty centers selected for Tier 1 University Transportation Center (UTC) designation under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) by U.S. DOT. The awards, announced by U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, provide $435 million to form UTCs around the country.
Lauren Brown Wins Student of the Year
C2SMART is delighted to congratulate Daniel Ortiz, a graduate research assistant with the Rutgers Infrastructure Monitoring Evaluation Group (RIME), on his selection as the 2022 Council of University Transportation Center Student of the Year Award.
C2SMART at TRB 2023
The Transportation Research Board (TRB) 102nd Annual Meeting was held in person, January 8–12, 2023 in Washington, D.C. This year’s theme, Rejuvenation Out of Disruption: Envisioning a Transportation System for a Dynamic Future, asked participants to envision transportation in a post-COVID world. C2SMART was well-represented at TRB this year, with 39 affiliated students and researchers presenting ongoing work.
Student Learning Hub Makes Strides in Continuing Education
As a University Transportation Research Center, it is part of C2SMART’s core values to ensure that we are building a diverse and well-prepared workforce of tomorrow. The SLH was launched as a way to give students the practical, hands-on experience they needed to be competitive upon graduation while simultaneously providing opportunities for researchers to improve their teaching skills.
Annual Report 2021-2022
The past year brought C2SMART more growth, progress, and partnership-building with communities and agencies. We initiated 11 new projects under our USDOT-funded research program ranging from artificial intelligence applications to transportation systems, equitable allocation of resources and technology, and digital twin modeling of infrastructure to improve resiliency of transportation systems. Ongoing projects produced significant contributions to the transportation field with direct implementations alongside industry and agency partners, and publications in some of the top journals and high-impact conferences in the field.
C2MART Presents at NYC Vision Zero Research Symposium
On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, Town+Gown: NYC held its annual Vision Zero Research on the Road symposium, a public event for city agency staff, academic researchers, and other analysts to share recent findings that relate to road safety. Various topics were covered during the symposium, including the intersection of sustainability and traffic safety, enforcement and education, emerging trends in e-micromobility, speeding, substances and driving, and road design. C2SMART Center Director, Dr. Kaan Ozbay, and Senior Research Associate, Dr. Jingqin Gao, were invited to present C2SMART at the event.
2022 Undergraduate Summer Research Program Uses Data to Improve City Transportation
Each summer, members of the Tandon School of Engineering faculty open up their labs to allow NYU Tandon, NYU Dual Degree Program in Engineering (CAS/Tandon), NYU Abu Dhabi, NYU Shanghai, and select non-NYU rising sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduate students to complete 10 weeks of hands-on research.
Emerging Leaders in Transportation Concludes Successful 2022 Cohort
The Emerging Leaders in Transportation fellowship program, a joint effort between the C2SMART Center and the Rudin Center for for Transportation Policy and Management, aims to enhance the toolkit of early-career employees to make transportation more efficient, effective and people-oriented. In this competitive fellowship program, participants will learn from top transportation and management professionals to enhance leadership skills, communication techniques and policy work to bring innovative ideas into practice.
Success in Long Island City: TransportationCamp 2022
On October 15, 2022 TransportationCamp-NYC was held for the first time in Queens, New York at CUNY School of Law. The program this year, back in person for the first time since the advent of COVID-19, sought to take advantage of the surrounding Long Island City, including a bike tour in partnership with Lyft and BikeJC.
