December 2025
During the fall semester of 2025, NYU Tandon partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, to provide construction management graduate students with real-world project management experience. The focus of this hands on research was through the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s (USMMA) Seawall Rehabilitation Project, one of the Academy’s highest-priority infrastructure initiatives.
In December, members of the NY District’s Project Delivery Team presented an in-depth project overview to the cohort of NYU construction management graduate students completing their final capstone course, “Leadership, Ethics, and Project Execution.”
In partnership with the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Rear Admiral John T. Shea was also in attendance. The students teams presented their work to wrap up the semester, during which they evolved their understanding of decision making throughout the entire construction project delivery process.
NYU Tandon’s capstone program is designed to mimic real-world working conditions by pairing graduate students with industry, academic, and federal partners.
The USMMA seawall project is uniquely suited for this purpose: it combines structural engineering, coastal resilience, historical preservation, environmental review, and complex construction management under federal oversight.

Thank you to our USMMA partners and Department of Civil & Urban Engineering at NYU Profs. Frank X. DarConte PhD, RA and Michael Albergo for their dedicated work throughout the semester. And congratulations to the students who completed the capstone course!
We look forward to building on this year’s program in years to come.
