In July, NYU Tandon Professor Daniel Vignon, of the Department of Civil & Urban Engineering, was awarded NSF’s prestigious Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER). The award is offered in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization.
Vignon’s research, Improving Road Safety and Supporting Infrastructure through Responsible Use of Driving Data, will investigate how the use of driving data for insurance should be governed to make roads safer and help support transportation infrastructure. This work seeks to address concerns such as data use regulations and privacy issues that have historically limited the potential benefits of driving data while also examining how the rules that govern the collection, sharing, and use of such data in insurance should evolve.
By combining methods from game theory, industrial organization, transportation modeling and simulation, the research will not only examine how the design of privacy and data-use regulations affects this emerging market but also study whether driving data could support infrastructure funding. The overarching goal of the endeavor is to advance data, transportation, and infrastructure policy while furthering our understanding of the connected mobility and insurance ecosystem.
Prof. Vignon, whose background is in engineering and economics, also received the NYU Tandon Junior Faculty Research Award and Goddard Junior Faculty Fellowship Award last year. Congratulations to Daniel on what is both a very impressive and well earned accomplishment!
