A Study on the Public’s Perception of Automated Vehicles as a Travel Mode

Autonomous vehicle (AV) technology is rapidly evolving. Where once the idea of “self-driving cars” was science fiction to most people, it is increasingly becoming clear that these types of vehicles are not only possible, but inevitable as a viable travel mode. What remains to be seen, however, is the ways in which the advent of autonomous vehicles will be received by the wider public. Concerns about safety, trust, and expense must be understood before a broad rollout of AVs is possible.

To jumpstart this process, C2SMART doctoral student Hella Alosta Alnajjar is conducting a survey to understand how the general public thinks about AVs, to gain a deep understanding of the people’s concerns and opinions, their attitudes towards why they would be willing to adopt an AV today or in the future, and what would be reasonable expectations for the acceptance of AVs from the public.

Ideally, this work will aid manufacturers, providers, policymakers, and city planners to better prepare for and deploy AV technology, pre-emptively address pain points in the technological roll out, ease worry, increase comfort, and understand public wants and needs from AV technology.
