The C2SMART Center is pleased to announce the launch of two new task assignments under the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). Led by C2SMART Principal Investigators Kaan Ozbay of New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering and Hani Nassif of Rutgers University’s RIME Lab, these projects seek to further advance the safety of roadway infrastructure in New York.
As of 2016, all roadside safety hardware, such as guide rails, bridge rails, transitions, and attenuators, are required to be compliant with the American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH), which presents uniform guidelines for crash testing permanent and temporary highway safety features and recommends evaluation criteria to assess test results.
C2SMART will lead a group including partners from Roadsafe LLC, City College of New York, and certified crash tester Calspan Corporation, to model, test, and evaluate the current state of transitions, railings, and barrier designs along the highway, and make recommendations for necessary modifications to ensure the hardware meets the safety standards set out by MASH.
“C2SMART is pleased to be working with New York State on this important infrastructural evaluation work, which represents an important step forward in ensuring and improving roadway safety,” said C2SMART Director Kaan Ozbay. The work is set to begin in March 2022.
